New York City Teachers

Background: New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg and teacher unions have been in negotiations for several weeks. A failure to reach an agreement by midnight last night caused the city’s schools to permanently lose out on $450 million in funding. Some news sources imply the negotiations concern how teachers are evaluated and encouraged to help children (LEFT). Other sources report the impasse regards the ease and method by which ineffective teachers can be fired (RIGHT). While the LEFT may make the teachers’ argument appear to be in the students’ best interest, the RIGHT presents teachers as self-interested at the expense of education and children.

“…new evaluation methods (are supported) as a better way to identify good teachers and to rid schools of bad ones… unions (are) fighting to make sure they did not… rely too heavily on test scores…(The failure) to reach a deal could lead to larger class sizes, fewer teacher hires and cuts in support staff and after-school programs…(The fight erupted after evaluation systems were endorsed that would make) it easier for districts to fire teachers who were repeatedly rated ineffective…”
